Free Movie Friday! 80's Cult Classic Puppet Master

This 1989 horror cult classic started the Puppet Master franchise. The stop-motion animation segments of the animated puppets in "Puppet Master" was done by the late David W. Allen. His work included the  Bloodlust: Subspecies II, Dollman vs. Demonic Toys, Bride of Re-Animator, Ghoulies II, Willow, *Batteries Not Included, The Howling, and the hallucination sequence in Young Sherlock Holmes. His production company  released Puppet Master series and the Demonic Toys series, amongst others.

Andre Toulon is a puppeteer who has mastered the alchemical secrets of animation. He made four living puppets; multi-paneled faced Jester who changes facial expression, fedora wearing knife wielding Blade, strongman Pinhead, drill headed Tunneler, and leech vomiting Leech Woman or Miss Leech, as the trailer calls her. (Leech Woman apparently is her fan name.) While they don't sound all that impressive, these little terrors are serial killers. After the death of their master at the hands of Nazi scientists, they are filled with rage.

"Present day" 1989, three psychics are contacted by Neil Gallagher and head to Bodega Bay Inn to meet him. When they get there, they are met with the news that Neil killed himself.

Soon after, the puppets come out and begin to kill the guests, one by one. It appears that Neil Gallagher has used their master's alchemical formula to fake his death and give himself eternal life, which has sent the puppets on a frenzied killing spree as they search out the man who stole their creator's secrets.

Resident Evil: First Hour Behind the Scenes

So this week we don't have a new episode for Resident Evil: First Hour, but we do have a behind the scenes look at the making of the series.

It looks like this may be the last of the Resident Evil: First Hour videos from Machinima.com.  I honestly would like to see more fan films like this one. For all it's low budget makeup effects, it has a lot more tension and is far more interesting than the ridiculous crap that Hollywood made and then slapped the Resident Evil name on it. *sigh* (Sure the first one was OK, however the quality of the others in the franchise quickly spiraled down the toilet. But that's a discussion for another post.)

Prometheus Trailer!

Hey Horror Fans!
The trailer for the Alien series prequel "Prometheus" is finally here!

Free Short Film: The Code

"The Code" is a horror comedy about what happens when a group of zombies, a serial killer and a vampire can't decide which night it is that they are supposed to be out killing people. I never thought that watching a zombie whine about Google Calender could ever be so cute and funny. But it is.

"The Code" won the Splatterfest Short Film Competition's Grand Prize, and 10 other Splatterfest awards including  Best Writing, Best Splatter, Best Editing, Best Kill, Best Special Effects, Best Director and Best Film.

Bruce Campbell awards director Mark Blitch the 2011 Grand Prize Canon Rebel t3i for the short film "The Code! "

Leon and Richard are stuck in the barn at the farm. Richard was bitten by Philip, who turned into a zombie. Richard is living on borrowed time; he knows that he is going to turn into one of them as well. Leon and Richard make a run for their vehicle and are then shot at by Umbrella operatives. [REC] First Person Shooter in the Works!

It was announced today by our friends over at Bloody-Disgusting that Filmax and Tonika Games have reached an agreement and the [REC] franchise is soon going to be turned into a video game.

Can you imaging how intense it's going to be to fight off one of the infected from [REC] with a fireman's axe?

The game is going to faithfully reproduce the story from the movies. Each movie is going to have its own world or level. The first two that are going to be released are [REC] and [REC] 2, and the others will come out when [REC] 3 and 4 are released. The game is going to be developed using the Unity3D engine that is capable of making games for PlayStation 3, iPhone and Android. It is going to be a "gender-based" FPS that will use the Unity3D engine to recreate the immersive experience of the movies in game play. So far, word is that the game play is going to be mission based with objectives to be met, and will be set at locations from the movies, such as the apartment complex from [REC] and [REC] 2.

Dynamic lighting and surround sound is going to be incorporated in the game, in an effort to make it as terrifying an experience as watching the movies. Weapon choices will be different for each character and scenario/mission, and it's sure to be a bloody violent, yet scary good time.

[REC] the game will be available for play on the iPhone, iPad, PC, Blackberry and Android tablet, in English, French, Castilian, Italian and German. The scheduled price is 2.99 Euros, and it is currently projected to be released for PC and Mac in January 2012, and can be purchased at the official website, or at the App Store for iPhone and iPad and Android market for the Android tablet.

You can sign up to be a beta tester for [REC] the game at the official website: rec-thegame.com

Free Movie Friday! John Carpenter's Cigarette Burns with Norman Reedus

John Carpenter's "Cigarette Burns" with the legendary actor Udo Kier and Norman Reedus is by far the best movie put out by the Masters of Horror Series.

"Cigarette Burns" is about a bankrupt movie theater owner who is hired by the eccentric film collector Mr. Bellinger to find the last remaining film reel of the legendary movie, "Le Fin Absolue du Monde" ("the Absolute End of the World"). It was only showed once, at the Sitges Festival, and it drove the audience into a killing frenzy. Kirby owes his father-in-law a ton of money, and feels guilt over the death of his wife. When he finds the film, it not only offers him a chance to pay off his debt, but get his dead wife back, even at the risk of damning his own soul.

Daryl Dixon fans who are starving for their fix of Norman Reedus need to watch this one! You may find his role as the main protagonist, Kirby, a bit subdued when compared to Daryl's redneck antics, but the obsessed movie theater owner has his own crazed charm about him that's pure gold.

By far, this is one of the best films that John Carpenter has done in a while.

Masters of Horror has the coolest song for the intro. I still can't find a copy of it for my iTunes though...

Free Short Film: Resident Evil: First Hour Episode 3

After Philip was bitten by the dead farmer's wife, Leon administered first aid. He and Richard are trying to find a way out of the barn and back to their vehicle so that they can get Philip to a hospital. Before they can escape the farm, poor Philip succumbs to the T-Virus and turns into a raving (albeit a little goofy sounding) madman. Are Leon and Richard going to get out of this alive, or are they going to join the ranks of the undead?

Fun Facts:

  • In this episode, the live action fan film's director April Choi makes a cameo as the stray female zombie that manages to find her way into the barn.
  • Watch the end closely, as you'll get your first glimpse of Umbrella Operatives as they approach the farm.

'Dying To Live' Book Review and Interview with Author Kim Paffenroth

Bram Stoker Award-winner Kim Paffenroth has written "Gospel of the Living Dead: George Romero’s Visions of Hell on Earth" "Dying to Live: A Novel of Life Among the Undead",  "Dying to Live: Life Sentence", "Dying to Live: Last Rites", and edited the zombie anthology "History is Dead", that was recently was nominated for the Black Quill Award for Best Dark Genre Fiction.

"Dying to Live" by Kim Paffenroth is the thinking man's zombie book. By that I mean, everything that was written, everything that happens to the characters had a lot of thought put into it. Paffenroth took the time to research, and it shows.

Book Review: High Midnight by Rob Mosca

"High Midnight" by Rob Mosca is about... well, I guess it's supposed to be about the sheriff luchadore, but I honestly thought that is was about the weird clown guy on the cover who is a serial killer that gets off on wearing "plaid bondage pants" while he blows people away.

He apparently went to the wrong building and walked in on a meeting that the chief was holding. A lot of the people in the force are out sick and they are short handed, so a co-worker (Philip) asks Leon to help investigate a report of domestic disturbance at a farm before he drops him off at the right building.

Happy Howlidays! Nation Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, Horror Style

Here's what my happens when my favorite Christmas movie of all times, "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" is turned into a horror movie. It's so funny and yet so disturbing when you see all of the violent events of the movie one after the other like this. I have to admit, the editing in this is fantastic!
