The zombie mod trend has caught on, and even the game developers themselves have joined in the fray to create utterly creepy and terrifying journeys into the realms of the undead.
Here's my list of the top three scariest zombie mods for video games.
3. Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare
"Undead Nightmare" is a zombie mod for "Red Dead Redemption." It's zombie hunting time in the Wild West, with a touch of campy humor. The mod pits John Marston against the ravenous hordes of the undead while he hunts for lost family members, clears out graveyards, and searches for a cure for the zombie plague.
You will fight zombie grizzly bears and mountain lions, and run into mythical creatures such as the Four Horses of the Apocalypse that you can catch, break in, and use as mounts.
These mythical horses have unlimited stamina and each has a different special power, such as War setting people on fire.
In addition to the mythical creatures, there are fast zombies, slow shuffling walkers, tough fat zombies that will knock you down, creepy crawlers, and zombies that are glowing green and vomit poisonous venom at you.
"Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare" has a single player mode and two multiplayer modes. Unlike other zombie video games, the virus that causes reanimation spreads in real-time. So if someone is bit and dies, he'll turn into a zombie right in front of you and try to eat your brains.
2. Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies
This "Call of Duty: World at War" zombie mod features 13 maps where up to four players must survive and fight of endless waves of the undead. The original mod is unlocked once the solo or single player mode is beaten and you watch all the credits. Upon restarting the game, under the solo campaign mission is listed "Nacht Der Untoten," commonly referred to as Nazi zombies in the gaming world.
The CoD zombie mod was so popular that it has spawned three different downloadable content (DLC) map packs, each map pack featuring different locations and enemies such as Nazi zombies in "Verruckt" and the Japanese zombies in "Shi No Numa."
1. Day Z
"DayZ" is a mod for "ARMA II," a military or tactical first person shooter. It has been praised as one of the best zombie games ever made by several websites, including Kotaku and Eurogamer. According to PCGamer, it's one of the most important things to happen to PC Gaming in 2012.
The game takes places in the fictional Russian state of Chernarus, which is best described as an Eastern European Wild West.
A virus has caused a zombie outbreak. You and your team must scavenge for weapons, medicine, food, and water while attempting to stay alive and survive attacks from zombies and rival groups of players. It is the most realistic survival horror game ever made thus far. You can bleed to death, go into shock from damage, faint from loss of blood, and die of hypothermia.
