The first season is about sheriff deputy Rick Grimes' search for his wife Lori and 12 year old son Carl. Rick has a strong sense of justice and upholds his principles, even in the face of the extinction of the human race.
When we last left off, Rick and the group of survivors he ran into had just escaped the CDC in Atlanta after it had been blown up by the suicidal doctor Edwin Jenner. Rick talked Jenner into letting them leave before the building self destructed. As they said their quick fair-wells, Jenner whispered something in his ear.
There has been a lot of speculation as to what was said, but my sources tell me that it is not that Rick is going to become "Zombie Jesus." How do I know? Well, Dr. Jenner took blood samples from the entire group upon entering the CDC facility. He was looking for signs of the zombie pathogen. My gut instinct tells me that during the blood tests, he discovered that Lori is pregnant. Who would want to bring a child into the world when its literally gone to hell?
On top of that, there is an underlying tension between Rick, his best bud and partner in the Sheriff's department Shane, and his wife Lori. In the events that led up to the first episode Shane thought Rick was dead, and ran to rescue Lori and Carl and protect them. Shane and Lori started sleeping together-- neither of them in the know that Rick was still alive. When Rick returned, that cut Shane off from Lori. If it's Shane's baby... well... Who knows what will happen then?
Whatever the end result will be, I am certain that this season will be more intense and character driven than the last. It will be interesting to see what parts of the original graphic novel they keep and what they do differently with the story line.
